Move It.

A fitness app designed for seamless integration with your smartwatch and mobile phone.

Background:

We were tasked with designing a fitness app called MoveIt.

The app needs to work seamlessly with a smartwatch and a mobile phone.

The persona provided for the task is Jarno Lindeman, a 42-year-old design manager from Berlin.

Jarno uses his watch to track steps and heart rate but seeks more detailed insights and guidance to improve his strength and heart health through simple, equipment-free workouts. Given his tech-savvy nature and busy schedule, he needs quick access to essential information on his smartwatch and comprehensive data and workout routines on his mobile phone. .

MoveIt is an innovative fitness app crafted for iPhone and watchOS, tailored to the lifestyle of our persona, Jarno Lindeman, a 42-year-old design manager from Berlin.

MoveIt stands out with its user-friendly interface, offering convenient workout sessions that can be seamlessly integrated into any schedule. In addition to the workouts, users can track their heart rate and access a comprehensive overview going back in time.

MoveIt’s thoughtful design extends to reminders for session completion, as well as saving and displaying results, fostering motivation and providing insights to the users’ health.

Empathize

The empathize stage is all about understanding the user and the market. We started off our project by creating a persona by analyzing the provided information from our assignment.

This included goals, pain points, motivation and a biography and gave us a detailed presentation of our user that help us in our design decisions later on.

After creating a detailed persona, we also used the information to create a scenario.

The scenario helped ut illustrate how our user would typically engage with our product and how our solution would help our persona on a daily basis.

To get a better understanding of the market, we conducted a competitive analysis to help us gain insights on our competitors and industry standards.

We learned that our competitors had features like the option to do a workout from anywhere with no equipment needed, heart rate sensor, variated workout sessions in terms of length and costumized courses.

Define

We mapped out the user journey with a user flow to ensure a seamless experience from start to finish, and detailed the specific tasks in a task flow that our persona would perform using the app, focusing on both smartwatch and mobile interactions.

To create a seamless user experience for both iphone and smartwatch users, it was important to ensure consistency and familiarity across both devices. We sketched two solutions and choose our best one by doing a NUF-test.

Design process

Strong color contrast were used on both devices to highlight important information for visual hiearchy. The same main color and circular shapes were used for both devices for simplicity. For the typography, we used San Fransisco for recognition to the product brand.

We prioritized and organized content based on its importance; only key information for the smartwatch, more detailed information on the phone. For accessibility we used larger touch targets and ensured readable font sizes.

We planned the navigation structures for each device, considering touch gestures (swipe and tap), screen sizes, and user interactions.

Lessons learnt

I really enjoyed working on this project, and It was fun to create a design based on a well detailed given persona. Truly understanding the users pain points and motivations drove more meaningful and impactful design solutions. If I were to add something to this project, I would create a dark mode for the app to create a consistent look on both devices.

This project consists of 23 slides.
